Frequently Asked Questions
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana interest rate is 8.2% per annum for FY 2025-26, compounded annually. The government reviews the rate every quarter and has historically kept it above PPF rates. The rate history: 9.2% (2015), 8.6% (2018), 7.6% (2020), 8.2% (2023-present).
EEE means Exempt-Exempt-Exempt: (1) Investment is deductible up to ₹1.5L under Section 80C, (2) Interest earned every year is tax-free, (3) Maturity amount is fully tax-free. This triple exemption makes SSY one of the most tax-efficient savings instruments in India.
One account per girl child, and a maximum of two accounts per family (for two daughters). Exception: if twins or triplets are born in the second birth, a third account is permitted with a certificate from a medical authority. Parents/legal guardians operate the account until the girl turns 18.
SSY is an active deposit account — minimum ₹250/year must be deposited to keep it active. If you miss a year, the account becomes irregular and attracts a ₹50 penalty to reactivate. You can pay back-deposits with penalty to regularize the account.
No. SSY is available only to resident Indians. If the girl child or parent/guardian becomes an NRI during the account tenure, the account must be closed. Interest will be paid at the Post Office Savings Account rate (4%) from the date of NRI status.
